‘Time Out’ was released in 1959 and would forever alter the way jazz was conceived by both critics and the mainstream. It was recorded from June to August that year at Columbia Records’ 30th Street Studio in New York City. The Quartet openly experimented with time signatures, creating a new and exciting sound and shaking up the otherwise rigid scene. The Quartet, and Brubeck in particular, strongly influenced the cool jazz period in the United States through their fearlessness in challenging the established order or rhythm and willingness to play with form. As you can hear on this remastered LP, the results remain noteworthy today.
